Manufacturing Engineer

St. Paul, MN

REPORTS TO:  Sales, Engineering and Operations Manager



This position will vet RFQ’s for the Sales department as needed.  Establish and maintain a rapport with the customer and confidence in the Product, to trouble-shoot potential problems and rectify existing problems. Maintain good customer relationships. Uses Solidworks and Magma along with formulated excel spreadsheets for calculations for the design and verification of grey and ductile iron gating systems.  Works closely with the tooling engineer, pattern makers and pattern shops on the plate and gating layouts of new and existing patterns.  



1.         Plate and Gating layout and design 

  • Calculates flow and fill rates for optimal casting fill
  • Calculates gates, runners and riser sizes
  • Determines best use of plate layout and design for best production options
  • Provides plate and gating layouts to internal and external pattern shops
  • Verifies gating design with use of Magma Soft


2.         Completely adopt APQP new product development process.

                        - Review all the new parts with internal and external customers

- Follow the APQP process until the sample process begins.  Hand over the remaining    process to Quality to run the sample until PPAP

- Complete the process by having a close out meeting and cost analysis of the product 

- These activities are part of the project management process that this position is responsible for.


3.         Scrap Reduction                                              

  • Participates as vital part of scrap reduction team
  • Address’s problem jobs through design and foundry knowledge
  • Implements corrective and preventative actions as they arise
  • Prepare and complete CARS for customers

4.         Auto Grinding Machine

                        -      Design and fabricate fixtures for different parts.

                        -       Monitor profitability of gate grinding parts.

                        -       Assist in programming the machine for specific parts.

5.         Update customers 3D models as necessary                  


6.         Advise customers of part design concerns and recommendations.

7.         Participate in daily project startups and engineering meetings.

8.         Manages work queue to maintain 95% or better on time completion of information to pattern shops. 

9.         Assist in other foundry designing projects as needed.

10.       Perform all duties in compliance with ISO 9001:2008 procedures and processes.

11.       Assists with training new and existing employees on plate and gating layout & design

12.       Perform any other duties as required by management.



Bachelor’s degree in an engineering required.

2-4 years’ experience in manufacturing preferred.

2-3 Years experience with 3D design and modeling using CAD software.

Experience using SolidWorks is highly preferred.

Prior experience successfully working with ISO 9001 requirements.

Knowledge of and experience with spreadsheets and word processing software, including Microsoft office products.

Ability to work effectively in a team setting.  

Ability to deal with problems involving non-standardized situations.



Our positions involve regular bending and lifting; continuous standing for long periods of time; pushing, pulling, and carrying of heavy parts and machines. Candidates must be able to lift 1-30 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
