Job Description Summary


Under the responsibility of the head of the Turbine team, the turbine design engineer participates in the design of hydraulic turbines in the different phases of a project from basic design to commissioning of the unit, including the basic and detail design examination and project follow up, support to manufacturing in GE’s shop and with our suppliers, commissioning and acceptance testing of the units on site for both existing as well as refurbishment of existing machines.

Job Description

We are looking for a Turbine Mechanical Lead Designer engineer for the North America Hydroelectric entity of GE Vernova. This role will consist of:


Essential Responsibilities
  • Analyze the technical information of the design batches (technical specifications, division of work, etc.) and participate in the identification of the project's technical risks and opportunities.
  • Carry out site visits to assess the condition of the existing turbine and supervise diagnostic tests on the turbine-generator unit before its dismantling.
  • Plan the design phase of the project with other partners, ensure monitoring and coordinate with the hydraulic design team (hydraulic testing laboratory).
  • Carry out the design and calculation of turbine components and validate those that are critical with experts.
  • Lead the design review and follow up on design review actions.
  • Provide technical support to the client in coordination with the project integrator engineer.
  • Prepare information for the execution of technical drawings.
  • Supervise and validate the work of the designer.
  • Optimize the design of machine components with the supply chain and the site installation team to reduce equipment costs.
  • Write engineering reports and documents, including test procedures, technical calculation notes, operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Provide technical support to the supply chain and participate in the technical support of the assembly and commissioning teams, including the processing of non-conformity reports.

Role

We are looking for a lead Turbine Design Engineer for our Hydro Power North America division within GE Vernova. This role will involve:
  • Analyze technical information from Work Packages (Technical Specifications, Division of Work and participate in identifying the risks and technical opportunities of the project on technical matters.
  • Conduct site visits to assess the existing turbine and supervise signature tests on the unit before disassembly at site.
  • Plan and follow project engineering basic design phase and coordinate with Hydraulic design team (hydraulic test lab).
  • Perform designs and calculations of turbine components and validate critical ones with Principal/Consulting Engineers.
  • Direct and manage design reviews, perform design review actions follow-up.
  • Provide technical support to the customer in coordination with the project System Integrator.
  • Prepare information for the execution of technical drawings and supervise and validate the draftsman work.
  • Optimize designs with Supply Chain, Site Installation to get the lowest installed equipment costs.
  • Write reports and engineering documents, including test procedures, engineering calculation notes, operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Perform Supply Chain technical support and participate to Site Installation technical support (erection and commissioning) of sub-assemblies / components designed by the IB CoE (including NCR treatment) (as agreed with Fleet Support).
  • Follow up the performance testing of the prototype turbine on site.
  • Develop tools and design guides for Installed Base turbine engineering.
     
Qualifications/Requirements

 
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or Masters degree in a relevant discipline, including a minimum of 5-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in the field of hydropower
  • Demonstrate technical leadership.
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively.
  • Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec. of Ontario or other Canadian provinces.
  • Must be willing to comply with pre-employment screening, including but not limited, reference verification and background check.
  • Must have unrestricted Canadian work authorization.
  • Availability for occasional travel.
