Design Engineer (Contract-to-Hire)

Location:

Troy, MI

Education:

  • BSME or Equivalent. 5+ years of work experience in CAD design and development preferred.

Professional /Technical Training:

  • BSME
  • Strong proven CAD experience in 3D modeling with CATIA V5 or Unigraphics NX5 (latest versions as applicable) 
  • Unigraphics preferred
  • Team center (Stellantis / GM) experience is required

Related Experience/Specialized Knowledge:

  • 5+ years of work experience in CAD design and development 
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in design engineering of automotive plastic parts
  • Minimum of 3 years of Automotive Experience Required
  • Extensive experience in Design of plastic and metal parts
  • Strong background of GD&T (Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing)
  • Knowledge of the automotive customer base and how they do business is required
  • DVP&R and DFMEA knowledge is a plus
  • Knowledge of Customer Specific Requirements is a plus

Additional Skills: 

  • Experience with PCs and application software, such as MS Office tools
  • Experience with modules – FEM or comparable design experience in Headlamps, Engine Cooling System, Bumper and Fascia
  • Understanding of structural mechanics and CAE analysis and results is a plus
  • Familiarity with DFMEA and DFMEA and Testing is a plus

Essential Functions/Duties

  • Under general supervision, performs Design Engineering tasks as assigned by the Engineering Project Lead and/or Engineering Manager/Director of R&D
  • Design Engineer may be asked to take the lead engineering role on the project to support the PM/ SU depending on the scope and stage of the project as determined by the Engineering Manager/R&D director.
  • Must be capable of working with independently with limited guidance from the Project Lead (PE /EM/ R&D Director) and demonstrate the ownership in taking the task to a successful completion meeting the expectation of the customer and the project lead
  • Design and develop products based on specification and/or CAD-data from OEM and internal developmental requirements
  • Capable of starting from initial concept to create a product design that meets the customer expectation and the principles of Design for Manufacturability and Design for Assembly  
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of plastic injection molding and metal stamping designs. Capable of understanding materials and structural recommendations from CAE manager/Project Engineer for structurally sound designs.
  • Demonstrate strong background in 3D CAD-modeling and 2D drawings using Catia V5 and/or Unigraphics NX5. [latest versions of CATIA and Unigraphics may be preferred when applicable]
  • Apply the fundamentals of GD&T to identify datum and locator schemes for parts as well as complex assemblies and make appropriate dimensional control call-outs on the drawings to establish and clearly communicate the design intent
  • Supports all design related activity for assigned program(s), from concept generation, development therefor into viable optimal solutions, through to production optimization.  Work with cross functional team members, logistics group and IE groups to ensure product design meets other stake holders interests.
  • Support the Project Engineer or Engineering manager in cross functional design reviews. Expected to demonstrate the same when acting in the Lead Engineer role.
  • Work with Project Engineer to support the testing in the DVP&R.  Coordinate the tests at the testing facility, document the outcome and present the final reports to the customer.
  • Organize and facilitate data transfers with OEMs and internally (VPM/ Teamcenter knowledge/SAP PLM)
  • Provide CAE-group Lippstadt with a “clean” suitable to mesh CAD model
  • When asked by the Engineering Project Lead, travel to customer to participate in on-site design reviews.
  • Must work effectively in a team environment
  • Organize VA/ VE sessions for the designed products
  • Lead resolution of design-related launch/manufacturing problems by developing appropriate product modifications
  • When required, travel out of town (out of state/ out of country) for short-term extended stays (1- 2 weeks) at a time in supporting program activities.
  • Support /Lead initiatives and projects as assigned by the Engineering Manager/Director to take the lead engineering role on the project to support the PM/ SU depending on the scope and stage of the project as determined by the R&D director.
  • Interact with clients in a professional manner and present a professional image at all times.
  • Understand and comply with company EHS policy

Marginal Functions Duties

  • Experienced with Stellantis, GM & Ford product development procedures and design approval releases
  • Prepare professional level technical Presentation using common tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Assist in special projects
  • Assist acquisition activities
