Background:

Electronic controls are critical to the operation of modern vehicle propulsion systems.  These controls – made up of computer modules, sensors, actuators, and software – are tasked to monitor and control vehicle operation to meet safety and emissions requirements while delivering the expected vehicle performance.

Within Stellantis the SDO (Safety, Diagnosability and On-Board Diagnostics) safety designer is responsible to know the regulatory and non-regulatory requirements during normal operation that are associated with their assigned functional areas  They are also responsible for identifying the potential hazards related to the controls function (Item Definition, Hazard and Risk Analysis), define the strategies to avoid them (Functional and Technical Safety Concepts, supported by the Fault Tree Analysis and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis), support the software and application teams for the correct implementation of those requirements, and support the calibration and validation of those strategies.  The functional safety engineers will be responsible for the complete safety life cycle for propulsion system control items according to ISO 26262:2018 and to follow the Stellantis company procedures to comply with the ISO standard.

Main mission of the SDO Designer:

Define the safety requirements at the propulsion system level for one or more propulsion system functions.

Provide those safety requirements to the SDO manager to support propulsion system programs.

In more detail, the propulsion system functional safety engineer is responsible for:

Main organizational interactions:

SDO designers, SDO tech fellows, functional and control designers and managers, validation and calibration teams, propulsion project teams

Deliver the regulatory and non-regulatory safety requirements, and the functional safety requirements (per ISO26262), for propulsion system electronic controls design and development
Support propulsion program execution by participation in supplier requirements review, Safety Release reviews, development and validation activities, and issue resolution
As required, perform detailed requirements development for new features and/or newly integrated electronic controls functionality
Supporting the creation and maintenance of the Safety Plan of the item development
Creating, reviewing and maintaining the Item definition
Performing the Impact Analysis and assessing the impact on the ISO 26262 work products of any change occurring to the item during the development
Creating, reviewing and maintaining the Hazard Analysis & Risk Assessment
Supporting the creation and the evaluation of Controllability metrics and a Controllability preassessment report
Creating, reviewing and maintaining the Functional Safety Concept
Creating, reviewing and maintaining the Technical Safety Requirements specifications and the Technical Safety Concept
Supporting the allocation of the Technical Safety Requirements to HW and SW elements
Supporting the creation and the updates of the System Architecture of the item
Supporting the creation and maintenance of the Development Interface Agreement with all the nominated suppliers of the elements of the item
Supporting the creation and the evaluation of the System Safety Analyses (FTA, FMEA, DFA) of the item
Supporting the planning of Safety Verification & Validation activities at different integration levels
Supporting the creation of test cases, their execution and evaluation of the results
Identifying all the Safety Requirements for Production, Operation, Service and Decommissioning of the vehicle and supporting the Production Process Assessment and the creation and the updates of the vehicle manuals for User/Owners and Service and Repair
Creating, reviewing and maintaining the Safety Case of the item
Supporting the Safety Assessment of the item and of the whole vehicle
Requirements:

 

Required Qualifications:
 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years of proven experience in automotive engineering
  • 3-5 years (flexible)
  • Have had Functional Safety Training/Experience per ISO26262
  • Great communication skills – able to speak in technical terms and be able on elaborate engineering and/or safety requirements
  • Automotive industry experience (in Electronic Controls)

Preferred Qualifications:
 

  • Master's Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years of proven experience in automotive engineering
  • Knowledge or experience in creation, review and management of deliverables according to the ISO 26262:2018 standard for automotive functional safety
  • Knowledge or experience with IBM Doors or other ALM tool
  • Knowledge or experience with the Dassault ENOVIA systems engineering PLM tool
  • Knowledge or experience with Ansys Medini Analyze tool
  • Knowledge or experience with automotive diagnostics management
  • Knowledge or experience with propulsion system controls design, development and calibration
